Martha Boshart - Artist Statement
I was just happy making art. I thought nothing of it, it was like breathing. Until it wasn’t.
What Is Art to Me
It’s all about the process. The road to get there. Art isn’t a finished product for me. Although I do make a lot of art. It is seeing where the next line leads me. My friends always ask me “How did you think of that?” or “What were you thinking while you made that?” My answer is it’s what the line tells me to do.
I’ve had lots of practice following the line. It started when I was in kindergarten when my teacher had one of my pictures published in a women’s magazine. Like then, it is someone else that thinks my work is special. To me, it is just being me. Of course, I was encouraged to take art lessons, pottery classes, enter contests and shows. I was just happy making art. I thought nothing of it, it was like breathing. Until it wasn’t.
It took almost a year for me to draw again. Tentatively I videotaped myself doing a line sketch. https://www.instagram.com/p/Be67ih-BsGZ/ It was a rough video, and even rougher sketch. But something about that experience was the key to unlock my creative side. I simply had to draw more, like a drowning person finding air. I posted in Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest looking for hearts, likes, and shares. Art isn’t a finished product. Not for me. It’s being who I am, and seeing what I can be. It’s about following the next line in my journey. I’m happy to share it with you, and wish you find joy in your journey.
